Personal magnetism can be described as charisma or personal appeal. All sorts of people have this intangible quality however there is a difference in personal magnetism expressed by a self-aware person and an unaware person.

The Science behind Personal Magnetism

According to Harold Percival author of Thinking and Destiny, personal magnetism is a radiation of your feelings and desires through your astral body. In the same way that heat radiates from a hot iron, personal magnetism is a magnetic psychic force which radiates from one’s astral body.

Personal magnetism affects the astral atmosphere and can cause either attraction or repulsion. We see personal magnetism expressed through manner, movement and speech. In other words, we see it expressed through one’s personality causing a person to charm and fascinate others or irritate and repel them.

Since personal magnetism deals with the energy of feelings and desires, we observe where this energy is settled in a person. In an ordinary lay person, this energy is settled in the lower chakras (Man has seven main chakras or energy centres in the body).

The ordinary Man’s feelings and desires are connected to the material world of objects which includes ego-based desires linked to food, possessions, name, fame, body, and bodily pleasures.

For instance, a rich man would flaunt his financial wealth so his personal magnetism is due to him radiating ‘money power’.  Someone with overflowing sexual energy would be charming and alluring because they radiate sexual attraction. A model would flaunt his or her body thus radiating physical attraction.

Someone with innate talent such as a powerful voice, knowledge of music and intellectual attainments would radiate those ‘talents’ adding to his personality and increasing his personal appeal.

When you feel a magnetic pull towards the ordinary lay person who remains unaware, know that the energy they radiate from the lower chakras is crude, primitive and animalistic. Mankind generally falls into this category and the unaware Man dies with the energy remaining at the lower chakras.

In an awakened person like Gautama Buddha the energy in the lower chakras has moved upwards, become transformed and purified to reach the seventh chakra called Sahasrara or crown chakra.

As the energy moves into the higher chakras, it holds tremendous power and personal magnetism becomes more apparent. The personal magnetism of a Buddha is felt by all.

When we take the inward journey towards the Self, we begin to purify and transform the energy that is at the lower chakras. We purify our feelings and desires and cleanse our mind from impurity and prejudices thus making our astral body stronger. We go beyond ego-based feelings and desires and become more connected to our Soul and our soul feelings and desires.

A self-aware person’s personal magnetism is evident from his eyes which show depth, his gestures, his soulful manner of speech and his grace. He radiates a peculiar kind of beauty, not the outer beauty which one is accustomed to seeing but an inner beauty which acts like a magnet. Even the deaf and the blind will be drawn to his presence.

Psychic Power

One who has developed a strong astral body acquires personal magnetism and also receives the gift of psychic power (siddhis).

Examples of psychic power include the power to heal, levitation, power to increase or decrease in weight, to remain immovable, to produce phenomena such as objects from thin air, the power of suggestion, hypnotism, telepathy, clairvoyance and clairaudience.

How one uses his psychic power determines one’s spiritual progress.

Let us take the case of healing. When a healer lays his hands on a sick body, his strong inner bodies will guide the forces of nature to work on the diseased body. If the healer’s motives are unselfish and he remains a witness to the healing process, then he will not deplete his own magnetism.

However, if the healer is self-seeking which means that healing is performed to obtain money or the healer assumes that he himself is doing the healing then this will deplete his reservoir of magnetism and he may also impart his own shortcomings to those he treats thus causing serious harm.

Paramahansa Yogananda in his book Autobiography of a Yogi shares how enlightened Masters never wish to appear as great healers. Therefore, they often disguise their powers by asking persons who come to them to put their faith in tangible objects.

For instance, Yogananda’s guru, Swami Yukteshwar Giri would tell those who approached him for healing to wear a bangle or jewel so that their faith was drawn away from the divine healing powers of the Master and placed instead on the bangle or jewel.

Let us now take the case of a clairvoyant. The clairvoyant should not intrude into the privacy of your thoughts, even if you invite the clairvoyant to do so. Otherwise, he is breaking the laws of occultism and he would receive his due punishment.

Psychic powers should never be used for gain. Otherwise, they cause harm to the one who uses them as well as the one on whom it is used.
