Enlightenment is not simply an intellectual understanding that one gains about living. It is a powerful experience of the immortal part of yourself. It is the pure and direct experience of the soul.

According to American Buddhist teacher and author, Dr Frederick Lenz, “Enlightenment is the complete awareness of life, without any mental modifications or conditioning of the mind. It is the experience of everything, every dimensional plane, world and reality.”

One who has attained the state of enlightenment is happy forever! He becomes free from the mental and emotional pains that unenlightened human beings experience every day. He lives in a condition of ecstasy, bliss and joy all the time.

enlightenment is happy forever!

Only an enlightened person is consistently happy because their happiness is not dependent upon external circumstances. Such a person does not depend on the senses to supply pleasure, for his joy is a million times higher than that attained from sensory pleasure. His joy is based upon the boundless inner energy that he gains from his connection with his inner world.

According to Dr Frederick Lenz, an enlightened person can do whatever they wish without fear or sorrow. He can choose to have a career or live in a monastery; he can get married or stay single, be rich and famous or live unknown in a high Himalayan cave. It is completely their choice.

When you are enlightened, you understand the immortal state, you understand that you are a soul. So, you realise that one does not die, one simply changes forms at the moment of death. Without enlightenment, when you see the death of loved ones, it causes you suffering.

One who is enlightened has a mind that is clear and his third-eye is open. He can see and know things that are taking place thousands of miles away. He knows what other people are thinking about him. He knows what is coming at him and he can decide whether he wants to experience it or not.

An enlightened person is no longer dependent on a teacher. He has learnt to light his own lamp which means that his inner guidance serves him well in all situations. He knows what to do and what not to do in any life situation.

that is clear and his third-eye is open.

An enlightened person is wise, he has learned to discriminate truth from untruth. He is not disturbed by the past or by what he imagines will occur in the future.

An enlightened person is aware of two distinct realities; objective reality and subjective reality. So, an unenlightened person sees a tree as something solid and tangible but an enlightened being looks at a tree and sees the ever-changing continuum of energy that is taking the form of a tree.

According to Brahmarishi Patriji founder of Pyramid Spiritual Societies Movement, enlightenment leads to life-zest. Life-zest can be described as a state where one becomes unconditionally accepting of everything and when graceful giving and receiving becomes a natural habit. As a result, life becomes a continuous celebration for an enlightened person.

Swami Satchidananda founder of Integral Yoga, describes an enlightened person as one with a pure heart. Such persons are blessed by divine grace.

The goal of life and of reincarnation is to become enlightened, to live life in an enlightened state fully embracing all life experiences.

Meditation a Prerequisite for Enlightenment

To reach a state of enlightenment, it is necessary to become empty by stilling your thoughts and emotions. Meditation makes the mind empty of distracting thoughts, feelings and ways of looking at things or in other words becoming free of all illusions.

According to Spiritual Teacher Osho, we should not become goal oriented and make enlightenment a goal. Instead, we should place our efforts on ensuring a consistent and regular meditation practice. If our meditation is going well, that means the tree is growing well. Enlightenment will come to us we need not chase after it.

In today’s world, people lack patience and determination, they want quick results without putting in the required effort. However, patience is a great virtue in spiritual practice. One needs to follow the path of meditation practice with firm determination and discipline.

So, Meditation is key. Enlightenment happens on its own.
