Origin
In the Bible, there is a reference to the Akashic Records, calling it the Book of Life. Nonetheless, it is the Theosophical Society that introduced the “Akashic Records” named after the Sanskrit word Akasha which means sky or space or ether.
Theosophical Society’s co-founder Helena Blavatsky introduced the word Akasha and described it as a sort of life force recording both the past and future of human thought and action.
The Society’s co-founder Henry Steel Olcott, introduced the Akashic Records in his book titled The Buddhist Catechism where he talks about "a permanency of records in the Akasha.”
Member of the Theosophical Society and clairvoyant C.W. Leadbeater further explains that the Akashic records are read from the mental plane (Akasha) however, the records are not from the mental plane but stored in the Buddhic plane.
It was Edgar Cayce, an American clairvoyant who introduced the Akashic Records to a wider audience. During his trance-like readings, he claimed to have access to information in the Akashic Records.
What are the Akashic Records?
The Akashic Records are like a gigantic memory bank holding a vast record of all the events on Earth. It contains the knowledge of everything that has happened in this world. It is also a storehouse containing every thought, word and experience of every Soul who has ever lived.
According to Spiritual Teacher and author Lobsang Rampa, the Akashic Record is a form of vibration.
He describes it as being similar, to a radio wave. Each radio wave broadcasts a different program, language, music and at different times. Radio waves are broadcasting all the time but we are oblivious to them unless we have a radio set to receive those waves and convert them to audio frequency waves.
In the same way, if we can tune into the waves of the Akashic Records, then we will be able to see the authentic history of the world and glimpse into our own past lives and potential future lives.
According to Lobsang Rampa, after death all Souls will view their own personal Akashic Record on another plane of existence. Each Soul will see the whole of their recent past life and view what went wrong with their Soul plan. Then having seen their errors, each Soul will plan again their next incarnation on Earth.
Indian Spiritual Teacher, Swami Amar Jyoti describes the Akashic Record as a recording in the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is like a computer chip recording trillion of bits of data. It records everything from the point of creation of the Soul up to the present moment. It stores all our vibrations and impressions and each action-reaction that happens in dreaming or waking state.
In summary, we can infer that our personal Akashic Record is a recording in our subconscious mind of all memories, experiences, desires, feelings, behaviour patterns, thought processes and actions and reactions.
This recording is in a much finer dimension hence we only access it after death. The exception being those who have trained themselves to tune into the vibration of the Akashic Records.
Reading the Akashic Records
According to Swami Amar Jyoti, yogis who have acquired the wisdom of seeing their subconscious minds will be able to view the Akashic records.
Similarly, Alcott shares that man has the potential to read the Akashic records when he has reached enlightenment.
According to Leadbeater only someone who has mastered the ability to be conscious on the mental plane will be able to read the records. Most clairvoyants and psychics are only able to do readings at the astral plane which means that they are unlikely to offer reliable readings of one’s Akashic Records.
Moreover, the records are simply records. There is no judgment contained in these records yet we do find Akashic Record readers sharing their judgments and opinions when offering readings.
Many spiritual seekers today are curious about their Akashic Record and chase after a reading. Such shortcuts are risky because obtaining inaccurate information distorts your perception of Self and creates more illusions.
It is futile to seek an Akashic Record reading to find out about your future. Cayce emphasized that the Akashic Records are a dynamic system and not a static library hence they do not predict the future. He explained that the future is not predestined, it is dependent upon our free will because we are always making a choice leading to the next choice.
Pursuing the path of Self-realization is the best way to access our Akashic Records. When we pursue spiritual growth, we align ourselves to a higher frequency making it easier to tune into the vibration of the Akashic Records. Moreover, we become aware of the positive patterns of behaviour stored in our Akashic Records and consciously tap into the positive aspects of ourselves.
